Located in Washtenaw County, Chelsea has a population of 4,398. First settled in 1820 by Cyrus Beckwith, along with Elisha and James Congdon, Chelsea was primarily a railroad town served by the Michigan Central Railroad. Named by Elisha Congdon after his hometown of Chelsea, Massachusetts, the Chelsea of today is recognized for its growth and vitality. Chelsea has the unique ability to retain its small town charm. Offering convenient access near major highways, Chelsea residents can easily commute to Ann Arbor, the University of Michigan, Detroit, and other areas of Southeast Michigan.
